The Festival of Folk Arts is a great family programme for locals and also a perfect opportunity for visitors to explore Hungarian folk culture and purchase some hand-made souvenirs.
Every year around the end of August, this huge fair is held in the Buda Castle as one of the features of the holiday celebrations in Hungary. On the 20th of August, Hungarians celebrate the birthday of the country, the foundation of state and the founder of Christian Hungary, St. Stephen. Our first king, I. István (Stephen in English) was named saint as he was the one who guided the people of the country into Christianity, deciding to follow the example of the West, trying to form a closer bond with them.
So the traveller who happens to arrive to the capital on this noble date, can expect numerous events throughout the city. One of these events is the festival in the Castle. The entry is not free unfortunately, but it worth the cost to mingle with locals and walk along the stalls with beautiful panorama, learning about the traditional crafts.
Several music and dance performances can be enjoyed here on multiple stages – one following the other. And let’s not forget the traditional tastes! You may taste the traditional cuisine, old time favourits and modernized dishes as well. Give a try to the classic sweets or taste the cake of the country, which is selected and can be tried on this day every year.
